Winery of Good Hope in Cape Town’s Winelands
A one-stop shop for South African fine wine at good value in Cape Town’s beautiful winelands.
This producer, based in the Helderberg near Somerset West and established in 1998, is a multicultural affair with experts from South Africa, France, England and Australia all playing their part in making natural wines using fruit sourced from all over the Cape.
Co-owner and Managing Director Alex Dale believes they have returned “to basic values, away from the botox and plastic surgery winemaking … styles of the past decade.” Viticultural & Winemaking Manager Jacques de Klerk agrees – he wants to express the wines’ “own individuality by working as naturally as possible in the vineyards and by employing traditional methods.”
This team has excelled, making brilliant Chenin Blancs, Pinot Noirs, Syrahs, Chardonnays and red blends from fruit sourced in the Helderberg, Elgin and the Swartland areas of Cape Town’s winelands. They have a huge – and somewhat daunting – selection of wines, but every one offers good value and a glimpse into the variety of wines South Africa is able to produce.
The Renaissance Chenin Blanc 2012 is perhaps their greatest triumph. It has an elegant pear richness and stone fruit verve with a long drying, apricot finish. It is a brilliant example of this variety.
