Wildlife safaris near Cape Town

Cape Town is surrounded by phenomenal natural beauty and if you’re looking for options for outdoor adventures, then it’ll spoil you for choice. If you want breathtaking beaches, picturesque mountains or magnificent wineland vistas, it has all of that – but that’s not where the attraction ends. Cape Town proudly offers some of the greatest safari experiences too.

Just three hours outside of Cape Town lies Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, one of the largest privately owned game reserves in the Western Cape and the closest, free-roaming one with all the big five animals. Nestled in the Warmwaterberg mountain range, this five-star luxury reserve is close to Cape Town but feels like a lifetime away – providing a true escape from the city lights. There are three luxurious lodges, ranging from five-star tented camps to a modern, family-friendly lodge. Activities include scintillating game drive experiences, unparalleled sundowner drinks with incredible views, star-gazing, bushman painting tours and walking safaris. The walking safari gives guests a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the endangered rhino or a pride of lions.

If you’re in search of a more tranquil setting that involves very little activity, but that allows you to simply relax and unwind in nature, then the Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Retreat is an ideal spot. It’s situated in the Cederberg mountains just 270km outside of Cape Town, and was recently awarded the number one Resort and Safari Camp in Africa by Condé Nast Traveler magazine. It’s a place to roam and explore wide-open spaces either by foot or on a bike, all while admiring the flora and fauna that surrounds you. However, if it’s pampering you’re after in this tranquil setting, than a trip to the award-winning spa will leave you feeling completely relaxed. Bushman’s Kloof also prides itself on its gourmet cuisine, offering picnics on the banks of the river or a culinary delight at one of its restaurants.

If it’s magnificent views you’re after, then a trip along the Garden Route is highly recommended. Gondwana Game Reserve will leave you breathless with its incredible vistas blanketed in the unique indigenous fynbos, making the big five animal spotting just an added bonus. The reserve offers guests a five-star luxury experience, including superb cuisine, expert game rangers and elite accommodation. What’s more, Gondwana Game Reserve is situated near the small but lively costal villages of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, home to some of South Africa’s best golf courses and beaches.
